Netflix released their new drama on July 21, 2017, starring Jason Bateman (Horrible Bosses, Arrested Development), Laura Linney (The Truman Show, Nocturnal Animals) and Julia Garner (The Americans, Martha Marcy May Marlene).
I started the ten episode series about a week ago and finished it quickly after watching the action-packed thriller of a first episode. You get thrown into Marty Byrde’s (Jason Bateman) situation almost immediately; Marty is a money launderer for a fictional Mexican drug cartel. You get to watch Marty almost drown in the sea of chaos he gets surrounded with as he tries to keep his family and business priorities above water; the consequences of not delivering threaten himself and his family. Netflix has announced that they have renewed Ozark for Season 2 which is likely to come out around June 2018.
WARNING: Spoilers Below
The first episode gives a brief preview of his life before everything changes; his wife is cheating on him, his two kids are turning into entitled brats and his job is simply unfulfilling at this point. In a moments notice, his entire life changes after an intense and gruesome encounter with the Mexican cartel. After this encounter, Marty is forced to move out of the comfort of his home to the Ozark’s to continue laundering money for the cartel. From there on, Marty tries to find local businesses to “invest” in; “invest” as in use those businesses to launder money. The pressure continues to rise and drama ensues as time goes on in this series.
If you’re looking for a similar type of show that has a parallel story-line and intensity to Breaking Bad or Narcos, which are my other two favorite drama and thrillers, then you’ll most definitely enjoy this series.
